ThrustVPS (A Review, Summary – STAY AWAY from them)

I signed up with ThrustVPS on Jul 27, 2010. Sounded like a good company although I read a lot of bad review about Rus Foster who is now leading this new venture previously known as DamnVPS. There were lots of issues in the start and not to mention so many down times that went unaccounted for.

Hence I thought I need NAGIOS, I got it installed on the already 128MB small XEN PV VPS from QuickWeb (because it has great uptime). So when NAGIOS was finally up and running, I started asking Rus about Why there was a downtime etc. Here is a screenshot of the entire thread (click on the following image to enlarge).

Later, I activated Referral Affiliates program (in WHMCS) and got a $60 commission pending payment. Here is a screenshot of my Affiliates program status (click on the following image to enlarge).

Suddenly, last week, I got an email from Rus Foster, asking possession for a certain domain in exchange for a 6 month free hosting of the lowest VPS plan. I refused and told him I am not interested. Rus counter-offered with 1 year worth of hosting, I had to refuse again since free VPS hosting is not what I wanted. It did not appeal to me either because I was already getting $60 in affiliate commission every month WHY would It appeal me? Then comes the worst part, Rus told me he would have to terminate my VPS IF I do not give him the domain name AND accept the free VPS offer in return.

At this point, I thought for a moment and realized, why would I want to trust a low-down, blackmailing fraud company with my data? I turned down Rus’s lousy offer the last time.

Since, all data was already being rsync’d to two other offshore VPS from two different providers, I didn’t needed time to backup. All my account, VPS, backups and the $60 commission was terminated. I was even fool enough to pay my Aug 27, 2010 invoice almost two weeks before. Now I regret my decision. I could have saved that money.

My first tweet when I finally knew they would do such thing
Rus Foster, ThrustVPS.com Fraud Review tweet

My final tweet when I got the NAGIOS alert on twitter from my nagios-twitter bot @twitgios

Overall, my experience with ThrustVPS was not so good from Day 1, Moved from node to node to get stability, then moved to XEN HVM and then finally blackmailed and terminated. I advise all to stay away from this fraudulent company. They will take your money, terminate your VPS and go after your domain names that you have.

He actually blackmailed me to hand him over certain domain names which he thinks believes is breaching the AUP. My accounts, VPS and the $60 of affiliate commission was terminated. I will advise everyone to KEEP AWAY from Rus Foster and ThrustVPS.com (click here to read the full review) […]

  • After reading your review, I am going to terminate my VZ in LA with ThrustVPS after 2 months. They are not good in handling reverse DNS. Looks like the reverse DNS is down too.

  • M. Naeem

They are horrible, it took me 9 days to ask for a refund for being on the dreaded NJ OpenVZ node and Rus was pushing me to realize that its a great node.

On top of that, they only have ONE node in NJ, what a shame!

    • I never had it in the start but just realized last week that it may be in the offline files at work. Yes, there it was. I will update this thread with that info too (the conversation screenshot)

  • Anony Mouse

…I currently use Linode and I love them, but they are much more expensive than Thrust::VPS. After reading your post, Ive decided to wait until 2011 to see how Thrust::VPS does. They just came on the scene this year…

  • Trasks

They are very bad, I had an VPS with them for one month and it was all the time restarting without any reason. The only fix I got was to cancel the service.

  • Anonymous

Dont forget Rus Foster's previous businesses where he lost everyone's VPS due to no security. Then blamed it on the author of HyperVM. I think the HyperVM author commited suicide a few days later!

    • Tom, Rus Foster told me the exact same words and I contacted WHMCS, they said cancelled means a user had a service and used it for at least one billing cycle and then cancelled it. Hence the commission would be paid out. Hence I will not agree with your statement.

How did I contacted WHMCS? because I myself hold a license for WHMCS for my shared hosting business.

  • CheckMate

The "bugs" in HyperVM never existed. The reported bugs had been patched 2-3 weeks PRIOR to them being reported. The hackers got the admin password through the owners gmail account, through good old social engineering.

The author of HyperVM committed suicide because he had personal issues following the suicide of his mother and sister a few years prior. Plus he was a loner and has father issues too. And no, I didn't know him, though you could find all this on wikipedia.

Man, Asim, what can I can wow…. what a strange set of events.

    thanks for the tip-off though.

  • Jay

Well I guess "RUS FOSTER" is disgrace and shame to the VPS industry. He is on mission to scam people and later he sell the company to some other company.

a2b2, cheapvps.co.uk were his first sites which he sold to bluesquare after his servers were hacked.

His password was "f0ster" … lol

Later he joined some company and then started thrustvps , damnvps and now gigevps

Believe me sooner or later he will sell his company to other and start new company again.

  • Alex

I had vps with RUS FOSTER when he was running fsckvps.com I paid for 1 year and after 15 days all data was lost 🙁
I never got refund or anything. He sold the company to some other company and now he seems started new company.
He is not honest or ethical person if you take my words.
He is just scamming people ethically. Like Jay said he is a scammer, fraud and liar.
If you are here for opinions then stay away from Rus Foster and his ventures. He will rip you one day.

Asim, Ligesh was very nice person. I knew him since 2006 even before he started Hypervm. We used to chat and talk about his vision and goals. There was nothing wrong with Hypervm but Rus manipulated his hack of poor password policy to cover his misdeeds.

He along with some of his friends crooked up the story of bug in Hypervm.

I feel so sad and sorry about Ligesh. I hate Rus like anything in this world. I know lot of other people hate HIM (RUS FOSTER) more than me. That’s why he mentioned some life threat to be removed.

I don’t know if you guys know about Ligesh or not. Ligesh was a wealthy person and he used to drive Merc Benz and had enough money in his bank account. How I know this does not matter. Ligesh was not doing hypervm or lxadmin for money but he had a vision. But this Rus Bastard took Ligesh’s Life.

Asim I have nothing personal with anyone. But I would really appreciate if you don’t let this blog die. This guy has blood on his hand.

    • Don't worry Ron, this blog is going no-where, I run my own hardware and have been in this hosting business locally since 2001.

I have a twitter-friend who has been using GigeVPS and has similar reviews.

  • Ron

I came to know about this site from WHT. I could not stop laughing at rus when he asked to remove some life threat for himself by jay. I don't know what rus mean.

Like CheckMate said… there was no bug in the hypervm. But the developer of hypervm Ligesh killed himself because of rus foster.

Rus has blood on his hands of Ligesh. His poor password policy took life of some emotional person who spent his life developing software and ended up like bad coder.

Rus you have blood of Ligesh on your hand. You should just get lost from this world.

  • J

I couldn't agree more with Ron:

"Rus has blood on his hands of Ligesh. His poor password policy took life of some emotional person who spent his life developing software and ended up like bad coder."

He is responsible for the fact that K T Ligesh killed himself.

I have a VPS with GigeVPS (UK VPS) and I find a VPS in BURST up in Manchester is actually better performing than a UK VPS from GigeVPS – it's disgusting.

Rus Foster is the sham of the industry.

  • Chris

Rus Foster huh I remember him very well. We had colo space with him during the days of a2b2 when he used to run a2b2 in bluesqure. He is a fraud. He later sold everything to bluesquare and joined them as staff.

  • Cosmin

Hmm, I have mixed feelings with ThrustVPS… I have one VPS in UK and one in NJ… the UK one is rock solid however the NJ one seems unstable.

I am running a few low priority projects as a test on them so if they go down no big deal. I was attracted by the price.

    Cosmin

  • I’m sad to say I’ve also had trouble with Rus – I used to have a number of dedicated servers with him, setup times peaked at one month (for which I had to pay), and when I eventually sold my former business to him, he paid several thousand pounds less than the amount on our contract, which he said was lost in the mail.

  • CarlosMtnez

    Hi Asim,

I found this post after a search in google, because I want to get a VPS from thrustVPS…

I read some bad reviews from Rus and his companies before, but this is horrible, trying to get your domain, so, I'll stay away from him/them.

    Thanks to share your review.

May you recomend me a good VPS Server max $20 1GB RAM. ?

I'm thinking in BurstNET (I heard bad reviews too), WooServers and RamHost

    Regards.

    Carlos.

  • Paul

I've hosted with thrustVPS, I can confirm they are terrible in every aspect of a host.

    Lots of packetloss

    Staff is horribly slow

Staff is not helpful at all

    Bad bad bad, and horrible.

Stay away if you're looking for a host you can use.

  • James

Yes we have been cheated out of money when he sold his other company and ran away overnight. I would tell anyone I know to stay away from them!!!!

  • Paul

I am another unhappy customer of ThrustVPS. I had 5 VPS’s there, I constantly had to move them to different nodes because the ones they were on kept getting huge amounts of packetloss. I soon realized they all have these problems because they heavily overload all of their servers.

Their support team is uncaring and extraordinarily long to respond to anything, including solid 100% offline server.

Out of the 20+ different companies I have hosted with over the years, ThrustVPS is the WORST provider I have EVER been with.

If you value whatever it is you’re wanting to run, don’t go with ThrustVPS.

  • Asim: I would like to see if we can start this conversation over again and see if we can sort out ownership of thurstvps.com. something that works for all parties. Nothing legal just an informal chat. IF we can't work anything out then we just walk away and leave things status quo. If you could drop me an email my email is linked to this comment

i had a deal for windows server with them.since i am a forex trader, i need their server to run an Expert Advisor but it seems that they had several downtimes and made me lost my money on trading for more than 1k and they FINALLY admit that they had some issue on the node.

a couple days after that ( today ) i received an email from Rus after i submit a ticket saying that my vps was offline and here is what he replied :

    "HI

Once service has been restored we will be refunding all payments and terminating your accounts with us with immediate effect. We do not tolerate abusive customers"

i was shocked with his statement saying that i was an abusive customer.. LOL.what did i do wrong?

i had a linux vps on one of their node and this december i had an invoice for that.after what i have just experienced,i would be a jackass if i paid that invoice

when i am writing this comment, an email just came up from paypal regarding a refund from thrustvps

  • emir

NEVER USE THEM, NEVER EVER GO WITH THEM
NEVER USE THEM, NEVER EVER GO WITH THEM

You will NEVER receive your server even when you put your best money on it and

took them 2 weeks to respond to emails

THEY WILL NEVER GIVE YOU ANY SERVICE [OR] SERVER,

just lost 3 months with them

  • Coen

Rus Foster is an ass…I just got my account terminated without any confirmation email..now I'm filing a dispute on Paypal and I hope I can get my money back..stay away fron Rus Foster and thrustvps. Don't even need to mention about lots of downtime I experienced there LOL

  • Ben Novakovic

Was looking at moving data to Thrust for m.tweete.net and have a box ready to go; but after reading this thread I think I'll cancel my VPS with them and find someone else. Thanks for the heads up.

    • Asim Zeeshan

      Dear Abdul,

What fraud orders? Fraud orders dont go through since many providers INCLUDING Thrust uses MaxMind (which has the tendency to even block real customers)

If you do not have proof to your hideous claims, please stop posting like you know it all

  • Matt

Just a heads up that Rus Foster has now branched ThrustVPS into IOVPS and sold out to ioMart who also own Rapidswitch althougg Rus is still running Thrust and IOVPS. I was automatically transferred to IOVPS by Rapidswitch and, yep, Mr Foster is up to his usual tricks. He's completely corrupted my server in transferring it to IOVPS yet is claiming that it is not his problem. It is beyond me that a man with such a well documented history of poor service and ethics has managed to sell his company to a big player such as Rapidswitch. I am in the process of moving service providers and escaping before this gets any worse!

    • Rich

We’ve just this moment cancelled our last 2 VPS servers we still had with IOVPS.

Like the above poster we were automatically transferred to IOVPS by Rapidswitch.

IOVPS are truly crap. They’re up there in my top three bad VPS hosts. Second place going to PoundHost (avoid their Windows VPS like the plague) and 123reg / Host Europe Group.

  • Steve

Rus Foster no longer runs Thrust::VPS. Not exactly sure what happened, but he's not around anymore. Someone else from iomart is managing it now.

    • @Nefariousity

HazeNet was merged into ThrustVPS by Rus Foster, so yes I am back as a customer of ThrustVPS.

It still sucks, support terminate my VPS even though it paid, put me on a different plan with less or more resources and cut off access to SolusVM every now and then.

  • I had 15 servers with ThrustVPS for client usage; I contacted them regarding their outrageous “Abuse” team continually suspending a server with no valid reason – and was told “you will receive a free month on this VPS – we’ll process that now”

A day later, and they said they decided to terminate their contract with me, and terminated all the VPS’ – loosing 15 customer’s data.

    Unbelievable.

    • Anonymous

Leyton, sorry to hear about that. Yes, the new support (post-Rus-Foster) is constantly suspending VPSes and even terminating them. This host is already down the drain, did you find a new place to host those 15 customers yet?

      All the best for future

      • We initially outed them to YardVPS (for US clients) and HostMist (for EU clients). YardVPS were above-average on the service front, but lacking in support. HostMist – fantastic all round, just sometimes a few split-second outages for what we can’t see as apparent reasons.

But, in all, now the client base is there, it makes more sense to just lease a Dedi and run it off of our own back’s – that way I don’t have to come into contact with the suchlike of Ryan@thrustVPS.

I was astonished to see a client with a lot of active services – whom just made a complaint (directly and privately to Thrust) have their services terminated with no more than 20 minutes notice.

  • Mra gds

The service I had with them WAS very poor. The thing is, I signed up for gigevps originally (which wasn’t 1gbps) then it became damn vps, then thrust, and I only paid twice in a year. I don’t know what happened with their billing but they fucked up big. So, their support staff is completely retarded. I got ddosed twice, both times they asked me to reload a new os on the vm. I told them why would I reload a new os? They could provide no valid answer and replied “let us know when the issue is resolved” to which I replied that ddos is external from my vm and I won’t reload a new os on the vm, that its not compromised, etc. It was just a bunch of bs that showed they don’t know jack shit. But hey, it was free right?

  • Henkz

It’s very SHIT company. I just bought my first time VPS from here and so many downtime occured in first 2 weeks. I always had a difficulty to login through RDC & VNC. WHen I sent the ticket support, I can login BUT my VPS is restarted. That means my previous software process (scrapebox & senukex) is lost. I have to repeat again. It occurs almost 10 times in 2 weeks. I’m done with them. I regret that I don’t find this website, I read in many forums that their service is good. I just realize HOW BAD THEY ARE…

  • shaadiconnections

Why would anyone consider using Thrust VPS for hosting? They are well know to host spammers, and hackers. Some of the worst DDoS and phishing attempts originate on daily basis from Thrust VPS. Many security scripts have Thrust VPS’ IP CDIR blocks in the banned list.
